1 July 2016: London based digital start-up Zealous, home to over 10,000 artists, has partnered with Women Over 50 Film Festival to celebrate female filmmakers, actors, and writers over 50.
The Women Over 50 Film Festival, formerly known as Short Hot Flush, addresses a real imbalance in the film industry over the lack of representation of older women, both in front of and behind the camera. In a report carried out by Directors UK looking at over 2,000 films made between 2005 and 2014, it was found that only 11.5 percent were directed exclusively by women. In another survey by Polygraph, looking at 2,000 films, it was found that women between 42 and 69 spoke only 20 percent of film dialogue, while men of the same age spoke almost 39 percent.
Festival founder Nuala O’Sullivan had this to say: “I noticed there weren’t many film festivals around that celebrated women’s stories. Then, I started reading the industry facts and figures – stats about how few older women there were in front of and behind the camera – and I decided to do something positive about the gender imbalance I found; that’s why I set up Women Over 50 Film Festival.”
Women Over Fifty Film Festival is harnessing the creative network Zealous, home to over 10,000 global artists, to take submissions for the festival. Since launching in April 2011, Zealous has grown into an exciting and engaging digital platform, with a focus on innovative and diverse visual artists from around the globe.
Zealous founder Guy Armitage on teaming up with the Women Over Fifty Film Festival: “Our mission at Zealous is to empower and celebrate a diverse range of artists, and provide them with opportunities they otherwise would never receive. The Women Over 50 Film Festival aligns perfectly with our core values through highlighting a marginalised group, and enriching the UK’s creative sector.”
The Women Over Fifty Film Festival will take place in Brighton, England, in October 2016. Submissions for the festival close on July 31.
