Screening of “Surviving Me: The Nine Circles of Sophie” to be held June 29 in L.A.
If you are in the Los Angeles area on Wednesday, June 29, you have the opportunity to support and meet feminist filmmaker Leah Yananton at a special screening of her first feature-length film Surviving Me: The Nine Circles of Sophie.
This fiction film chronicles the misadventures of aspiring poet Sophie (Christine Ryndak) as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery amidst a sexual identity crisis going into her junior year of college. Fear and insecurity eventually get the best of her, and Sophie loses her moral compass, damaging her relationships with her boyfriend Jimmy (Vincent Piazza, Boardwalk Empire) and her bi-sexual best friend Kiera (Leah Yananton), as well as her poetry professor Slateman (Fredric Lehne, Lost) and his enigmatic wife Jacqueline (Mira Furlan, Lost). Before she can find redemption and move into the next phase of her life, Sophie must journey through her own experience of Dante’s Inferno and take responsibility for her behavior. Watch the trailer.
Surviving Me features a brave, luminous performance by newcomer Christine Ryndak as a young woman awakening to her sexual identity and accepting the weight of adult responsibilities as she navigates the “inferno” of sex and love in college. First time filmmaker Leah Yananton cleverly interweaves poetry and text throughout the story, mirroring Sophie’s internal and external struggles.
