I love all of Agnès Varda’s work (thus the name of this site—ha ha!), especially The Gleaners and I, Cleo from 5 to 7 and The Beaches of Agnès. jeffrey Blitz’s Spellbound, Zana Brisky’s Born into Brothels, Pamela Tanner Ball and Nancy Kennedy’s Who Does She Think She Is?, Angela Christlieb and Stephen Kijak’s Cinemania, Kevin Rafferty, Jayne Loader, and Pierce Rafferty’s The Atomic Café, Rosylyn Rhee’s Same Same but Different, the Maysles’ brothers’ Grey Gardens, and Tia Lessins and Carl Deal’s Trouble the Water are also great inspirations for me. I’m a big fan of Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera and the gorgeous madness he creates with editing and sound. On the fiction side I love Two for the Road, Notorious, An Education, Crooklyn, Amelie, Bend It Like Beckham, The Royal Tenenbaums, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Real Women Have Curves, Lost in Translation, Fanny and Alexander, Winter’s Bone, Breathless and Saving Face. |
| Favorite filmmakers: |
My filmmaking hero is Agnès Varda for her over half-a-century-long exploration of female (and feminist) experiences in her work both in documentaries and fiction films. I am also a big fan of Gurinder Chadha, Vertov, Jeffrey Blitz, Joe Wright, Rosylyn Rhee, Spike Lee, Sofia Coppola, Pedro Almodóvar, Alfonzo Cuarón, Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Donen, Wes Anderson, Sally Potter, Cheryl Dunye and the irreverent sassiness of Mae West’s work. |
| Message for the agnesfilms community: |
I am eager to share my experiences with our agnès films community and to learn from every one of you! We really need more amazing women and men telling feminist stories through film and video and I hope that our site will inspire and help its members to do so! |
